InSPARation: Lyme
Regis Youth Café
InSPARation, the Lyme Regis youth
café, provides services to young people, aged 13–25, from
Lyme and the surrounding area, and acts as a platform for outreach
activities in the town. Young people are on the management
committee, and are involved in all aspects of running the café.
Services at
the café include:
- Drop-in
advice sessions three evenings, and one lunch time, a week, also
providing free pool, broadband computer access, games, TV games,
and free fruit given away as healthy snacks.
- InSPARation
is developing as a Cinecafe, through finance from the Lyme Regis
Film Society. The café offers young people the opportunity to use
digital media equipment to make their own multimedia and to
showcase their out-of-school work and school work in the
café.
- Young
people being involved in the running of the kitchen, with all
profits being reinvested in the project.
Activities in
the community include:
- Conservation
activities with the National Trust, for young people working
towards the Duke of Edinburgh Awards;
- Participation
in the Lyme Regis Arts Fest;
- Working
with the Woodroffe School Arts College Project to redesign the
signs outside the cafe, and the 2007 interior
refurbishment.
- Outings,
including a trip to Parliament to meet the local MP, Oliver
Letwin
- The
Youth Forum (Lyme Youth Matters) meets once a fortnight. It is
very active within the community, and is continually working
towards the establishment of a permanent skatepark in Lyme. The
Lyme Skate Park Forum previously helped establish a temporary
skatepark in Lister gardens.
- Lyme
Youth Matters is involved in the setting up of the West Dorset
Youth Bank and West Dorset Youth Council.
- Committee
members of InSPAR have been actively involved in the production of
the Lyme Forward Community Plan.
InSPARation
works in conjunction with other organisations
including:
- The
Dorset County Council Youth and Community services to deliver
youth work, outreach workers, drugs and alcohol advice, and sexual
health advice, including chlamydia screening.
- An
out-of-school project, funded by the Local Network Fund, for young
people who were excluded from school, home tutored, withdrawn from
school for personal reasons, or referred to InSPARation by

School
because of poor attendance. These included young people with
autism, aspergers, and ADHD.
- Working
with Connexions, InSPARation ran a project targeting NEET (Not in
Education, Employment or Training) young people in the area, with
good success at finding young people work and education.
